AIDS awareness events continue at Cricket World Cup
"In
cricket, every ball counts, and it's the same with the fight against AIDS:
everyone's contribution makes the difference." These were the words of the
UNAIDS Coordinator in Guyana and Suriname, Dr. Ruben del Prado, speaking during
a visit by the South African Cricket Team to the Dorothy Bailey Youth Health
Center in Georgetown, Guyana.
After their short win against Sri Lanka at the
Super 8 Stadium of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, the South African team
decided to take the time to show their support for the health center and its
initiatives for young people living with HIV, the first such center in Guyana
Rely on teamwork to defeat AIDS
Led by the
Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy and UNICEF Representatives in Guyana, Mr
Johannes Wedenig and Dr del Prado, the cricket team entered the packed hall of
schoolchildren and other guests. Under banners bearing the slogan "Unite
for Children against AIDS," two schoolchildren, Murisa and Darren,
welcomed everyone and spoke of the need to combat the spread of HIV. Dr.
Ramsammy told the meeting that HIV and AIDS is a global problem.
"We are
all in the same boat and AIDS can only be defeated if we work as a team,"
he said.
