AIDS awareness events continue at Cricket World Cup

"In cricket, every ball counts, and it's the same with the fight against AIDS: everyone's contribution makes the difference." These were the words of the UNAIDS Coordinator in Guyana and Suriname, Dr. Ruben del Prado, speaking during a visit by the South African Cricket Team to the Dorothy Bailey Youth Health Center in Georgetown, Guyana.
After their short win against Sri Lanka at the Super 8 Stadium of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, the South African team decided to take the time to show their support for the health center and its initiatives for young people living with HIV, the first such center in Guyana
Rely on teamwork to defeat AIDS
Led by the Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy and UNICEF Representatives in Guyana, Mr Johannes Wedenig and Dr del Prado, the cricket team entered the packed hall of schoolchildren and other guests. Under banners bearing the slogan "Unite for Children against AIDS," two schoolchildren, Murisa and Darren, welcomed everyone and spoke of the need to combat the spread of HIV. Dr. Ramsammy told the meeting that HIV and AIDS is a global problem.

"We are all in the same boat and AIDS can only be defeated if we work as a team," he said.
