Indian fans exult after their cricket team won Saturday's World Cup final.
For its
part, Sri Lanka failed for the second consecutive time in the final after
losing in 2007 to Australia . And for the first of the history of the World
Cup, an author player 100 points or more (Sri Lankans Mahela Jayawardene, 103
pts) did not win the final.
With two
victories, India joins the winners of the West Indies, victorious in 1975 and
1979, Australia eliminated this year by India in the quarterfinals, remaining
alone ahead with four trophies, three consecutively in 1999, 2003 and 2007.
The final
phase of the World Cup kicked off on February 19 in India, Sri Lanka and
Bangladesh . In the semifinal, India beat Pakistan under the eyes of the prime
ministers of both countries ( read our article on cricket diplomacy ).
